A consortium of three major German industrial players has secured a pivotal role in a next-generation defense project. OHB SE, Rheinmetall, and Airbus are joining forces to develop and deploy a new satellite constellation for the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr. Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, has confirmed the collaborative agreement, highlighting the substantial scale of the undertaking.
Scaling a Satellite Network for National Security
The initiative, known as SATCOMBw 4, outlines an ambitious multi-phase rollout. The initial stage involves the construction and launch of a fleet numbering between 100 and 200 satellites. The long-term strategic vision, however, is far more expansive, with plans to grow the system to encompass more than 1,000 satellites in orbit. Within this triad, Bremen-based OHB SE has been tasked with the core technological implementation of the satellite systems themselves. This responsibility solidifies the company’s standing as a central figure in Germany’s military space infrastructure.
This high-profile partnership aligns with a broader corporate strategy recently signaled by OHB. On March 9, the company confirmed its ongoing participation in discussions concerning public tender procedures. Furthermore, the firm’s order book was strengthened last fiscal year by a major €81 million contract for an asteroid mission focused on planetary defense.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?
Financial Performance Awaits Scrutiny in Upcoming Reports
The financial impact of these significant contracts on OHB’s 2025 fiscal year will become clear imminently. The company is scheduled to release its annual financial report and consolidated financial statements in German on March 19, 2026. An English-language version will follow one week later, on March 26.
These documents will provide the first concrete evidence of whether the company’s operational performance has kept pace with its expanding order backlog. By prioritizing the SATCOMBw 4 project and a sharper focus on security-critical infrastructure, OHB’s management has established clear strategic directives. Next week’s figures will offer a crucial initial assessment of how this strategy is translating into financial results.
