Daimler Truck Expands Powertrain Options in Strategic North American Pivot

In a significant strategic shift for its North American operations, Daimler Truck is broadening the powertrain choices available to its commercial fleet customers. The company’s Freightliner and Western Star brands will begin offering external Cummins engines for the 2027 model year, a move designed to provide greater flexibility in meeting stringent new emissions standards.

A Multi-Pronged Approach to U.S. Regulations

The driving force behind this decision is the latest set of emissions rules from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which mandates that manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles diversify their propulsion systems. Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is responding by integrating several Cummins engines alongside its proprietary Detroit Gen-6 diesel lineup.

The expanded portfolio will now include the Cummins B6.7 Octane gasoline engine, as well as the Cummins X10 and X15 models. Orders for the B6.7 Octane are scheduled to open later this quarter, with production commencing in the third quarter of 2026. Manufacturing of the Detroit Gen-6 DD13 and DD15 diesel variants will start in January 2027, followed by the larger DD16 engine in early 2028.

This parallel offering of diesel, gasoline, and alternative powertrains allows fleet operators to tailor their vehicle specifications more precisely to specific duty cycles and regional regulatory demands.

Leadership Reshuffle at Key Indian Tech Hub

Concurrently, Daimler Truck has announced a leadership change at its major innovation center in India. Radhakrishnan Kodakkal is taking over as Managing Director and CEO of the Daimler Truck Innovation Center India (DTICI) in Bengaluru. He succeeds Raghavendra Vaidya, who is transitioning into the role of global Chief Information Officer for Daimler Truck AG.

The Bengaluru center is responsible for developing software solutions, digital platforms, and IT infrastructure for the corporation’s global vehicle brands. This executive transition underscores the continued strategic priority of expanding the group’s development capabilities in vehicle connectivity and digitalization.

Strategic Implications and Market Context

Taken together, these developments—the powertrain expansion in North America and the leadership reinforcement in India—highlight Daimler Truck’s operational priorities: enhancing product flexibility in regulation-heavy markets and strengthening its digital development foundation.

The market will be watching to see if these strategic decisions can provide support for the company’s shares, which have retreated approximately nine percent from their 52-week high of 44.39 euros. The medium-term trajectory will likely depend on the speed at which North American fleet customers adopt these new powertrain platforms.
