As relatively new parent, scenes where bad guys kidnap or generally mess with little children hit different now. So Hobgoblin got instant heat with me early in this issue.

I’ve been a critic of John Romita Jr’s in the past. But I will say this: He draws a really good Hobgoblin. He gives a great texture to the character’s costume.

Zeb Wells is doing a good job making Norman Osborn sympathetic, like someone who’s trying to genuinely redeem himself. Thus, it’ll be all the more heart-wrenching when he inevitably goes back to the dark side.

Patrick Gleason drawing both Spidey and Wolverine? Cut me a slice of that!

I wasn’t overly thrilled to see the X-Men in this issue, as I find their line of books is as impenetrable as ever for me as a novice to the mutant world. But still, having Spidey and MJ attend Krakoa’s Hellfire Gala is a fine way to bring them together.

Spidey wears a red and black suit to the affair, which apparently doubles as his equivalent to formal wear? I never knew he had a “black tie” costume…

Epic Covers: The Avengers #59 by Mark Bagley

I have no idea what’s happening in The Avengers nowadays. Thankfully, you don’t need that knowledge to appreciate this recent variant cover to The Avengers #59 by Mark Bagley, paying tribute to 900 issues of The Amazing Spider-Man. He’s one of the best Spidey artists of all time, so to see him drawing so many of the character’s various costumes from over the years is, to say the least, epic. We’ve got black suit Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider, Iron Spider, the Superior Spider-Man, just to name a few.

Amazing, indeed.

As I’ve indicated previously, I really dig this cover. It’s the best Romita has put out for this series thus far.

There’s a cool high altitude, high velocity struggle between Spidey and the Vulture in this issue. Very enjoyable, and again, some of the best work Romita has turned in since he returned to the character.

As this new dynamic between Peter Parker and Norman Osborn continues to progress, I keep coming back to that “so smart it makes you dumb” quote about Peter from issue #2. This is not going to end well…

Epic Covers: Spidey as Green Goblin?!?

Over in The Amazing Spider-Man, Spidey’s getting some tech help from an extremely unlikely source: Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin. Thus, the very Goblin-esque look he’s sporting on the cover of this week’s ASM #8.

I like this cover by John Romita Jr. (with Scott Hanna on inks and Marcio Menyz on colors) because it creates instant intrigue. In giving Spider-Man visual traits that line up with his arch nemesis (the glider, the green lighting and…is that the Spidey version of a pumpkin bomb?), the reader instantly has questions about what’s going on. Thus, a desire to open the issue.

I’ve been a critic of John Romita Jr’s in the past. But this one is a winner, right here. Easily the best cover of his to come out of this new ASM volume thus far.

Apparently, Spidey is about to get some tech help from Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin. “So smart it makes you dumb” indeed…

Wells seems to add Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, to Peter’s supporting cast in this issue. I can’t bring myself to complain about that.

Romita gets to draw the Vulture here. While I’ve been pretty critical of his work in the past, he’s undeniably one of the more iconic Spidey artists of all time. So any time he gets to draw a classic villain like that, it’s a treat.

One of the back-up stories in this oversized 900th issue is about Peter Parker returning overdue books to the library. As the husband of a librarian, I appreciated that one.

Another back-up is about Spidey meeting Jimmy Kimmel. So there’s that.

This issue is filled to the brim with great work by great creators. But selfishly I gravitated toward Ed McGuinness, who draws the main story in his exaggerated and cartoony style. He gets to work on not only Spidey, but his supporting cast and several classic villains. This one is pricey, but worth it.

Wells does a nice job of injecting humor into this issue, as Spidey goes through a situation that’s pretty tense and devoid of natural humor. It doesn’t feel forced or contrived. That takes skill.

There’s also a sweet scene between Peter and Aunt May that, in a lot of ways, encapsulates their relationship at large.

I can’t say this first story has blown me away. But at the very least, Wells and Romita have me interested in coming back for more.

Spidey is bleeding from the face in this issue, and naturally, the blood soaks through his mask. It looks a little splotchy in certain panels. But I appreciate the idea nonetheless.

Zeb Wells is as good as any author I’ve read in recent memory at writing the “Parker luck.” In other words, the weight of Peter’s responsibilities bearing down on him, and how he struggles (and often fails) to balance them all. It makes for a product that feels very authentic.

In this issue one of Norman Osborn’s grandkids says something to Peter that’s pretty spot on…

“Grandpa says you’re so smart it makes you dumb.”

No Mary Jane in this issue, which is a little disappointing when you consider the big revelation we got last issue. Not to mention the cover. But I can chalk this one up to having patience with the story Wells is telling. Thus far, this feels authentically like a Spider-Man tale.
