I dig that cover, but…is that an S&M mask the Joker is wearing? What the hell? First S&M Riddler in The Batman and now this? If they give one to the Penguin I’m gettin’ the hell outta here…

Silvestri hits his stride with this issue, particularly in terms of his writing. His art was pretty much always on point.

The one downside to the writing: Nightwing is in this story, essentially in a sidekick role. Which is odd, because last I checked Batman had a sidekick. You might have heard of him. His name is Robin.

Neil Googe and Rico Renzi put together a really fun rendition of the Riddler. Classic Riddler, mind you. Not S&M Riddler.

Batgirls has hit its stride, and become one of the most fun offerings at DC Comics right now. Not just because of the dynamics between the characters, but work Neil Googe is turning in. It’s a bit unconventional for a Bat-book. But he’s making it work. I’m hopeful this series has a long life in front of it.

Epic Covers: The Riddler: Year One #1

Time to get on my soapbox: The more time that goes by, the less impressed I am with The Batman. Was it a decent movie? Sure. But was it as great as everybody seems to think it is? Not for my money…

I wasn’t enthralled with the way the movie presented the Riddler. I’ve come to call this version “S&M Riddler,” because he looks to me like he’s wearing a raincoat with an S&M mask and glasses.

All that being said, I can give credit where credit is due. Last week’s The Riddler: Year One #1 knocked it out of the park with a great cover by Bill Sienkiewicz. It really captures the creepy, domestic terrorist, DIY supervillain vibe the movie went for with this version of the Riddler. The yellow markings almost look like they were done with a sharpie or a highlighter, and the greenish color scheme is consistent with the movie as well. And of course, you’ve got the creepy image of the Riddler in full costume in the background.
