This issue references specific songs by both Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones. I like me a good classic rock soundtrack.

This is very much a “back to basics” approach to a Green Lantern book. Hal Jordan is our star, we’re back in Coast City, he’s back at Ferris Air, etc. Nothing wrong with that. Hopefully it proves to be a good jumping-on point for newbies.

Not sure if John Stewart is getting the same approach with his back-up feature. But that certainly seems to be the case thus far. Gotta love a man who takes care of his mother…

This issue is centered around Jon being afraid to talk to his dad about his bisexuality. It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that the matter ends on a high note. Because…y’know, his dad is Superman. He says all the right things. But it’s still a nice little window into what I’m sure a large percentage of LGBTQ people go through with their parents. Even those who aren’t as supportive as Superman.

Artistically, the opening scene in this issue is fun. A nice little race sequence between father and son. It made me smile.

This issue’s feature is supposed to be about Green Arrow, with a back-up that’s about Green Arrow and Black Canary as a couple. But in truth, both stories are more or less about Ollie and Dinah. So they may as well have told one larger story about the two of them, as opposed to a larger one and a smaller one.

Artistically, both stories look great. But from a character insight perspective the back-up is stronger, as Pariah learns that he’s better off imprisoning Ollie and Dinah together than apart…

The theme in this book of religion and spirituality being used as a tool of manipulation is poignant. I can appreciate a book where a religious hero is willing to acknowledge its uses for more sinister purposes.

Azrael and Vengeance, Bane’s daughter, mix it up in the early part of this issue. The fight is short, but pretty sweet. I’ve got high hopes we’ll see them go at it again in the near future.

I’d argue Jean-Paul Valley isn’t always the easiest character to sympathize with or relate to. Case in point, when we meet him in this issue he’s living as a monk at a monastery. Not necessarily a lifestyle your average reader can connect with…

But under Dan Watters, Valley is a man trying to live with what he sees as a monster inside him, while also trying to do good in the world. At the very least, that’s admirable. And who among us hasn’t lived with a part of ourselves we don’t like?

There’s a pretty cool silent page in this issue where Black Canary lets herself fall backward off a cliff. Really nice work by Paolo Pantalena.

There’s no throne of skulls in this issue. If you’re going to put a throne of skulls on the cover, you need to follow through on the interior. Isn’t that a rule? If it’s not, it should be.

Deathstroke Inc. is chugging along, as we’re starting to see how and why the series has its name. It looks like we’re about to get Batman Inc., only a whole lot deadlier…

I don’t like when superheroes act chummy with their villains. Case in point, Superman playing a game of chess with Lex Luthor in this issue. Even by superhero standards, it’s silly. Plus, the metaphor is beyond obvious and Tom Taylor is a better writer than that.

On the up side, we get a pretty cool flashback sequence with Superman, Lex, and the Justice League that feels classic and cool. Especially with Romulo Fajardo Jr’s colors. It’s actually reminiscent of an episode of the Justice League cartoon.

The scope of this story has widened significantly. Beyond Joker and Gordon, we’ve now got Vengeance (i.e. Lady Bane), a bizarre cloning facility, the Court of Owls, and more. It’s clear Tynion has a lot of ideas here. I just hope he gets a chance to explore them all to their fullest.

Is it weird that after last issue I wanted Gordon and Vengeance to have a fling? Yes. I’m going to say yes it is weird. But you certainly wouldn’t have seen it coming.
