With some comic book stories, you have the problem of too many issues, the story overstaying its welcome, etc. This book doesn’t have that problem. At only four issues, The New Champion of Shazam! under-stays its welcome. (That’s despite the delays that have hit this thing.) That’s not the worst problem to have…

Josie Campbell and Evan “Doc” Shaner continue to be the pitch perfect team for Mary Marvel, delivering character, action, drama, and humor. They even give us a little wink about the name Ms. Marvel.

I was sad when this story took a month off in October. I missed it.

I’m equally sad this is our penultimate issue. I’ve talked about the potential New Champion has as an ongoing series. But we could have gotten another, say, two issues out of this.

At this point in the story, Mary’s pet bunny can’t talk to her anymore. That saddens me. Never underestimate the charm and appeal of talking animals, I suppose.

Evan “Doc” Shaner’s art continues to be pitch perfect for Mary Marvel. More of him in the DC Universe, please.

Campbell, Shaner, and Carey are functioning like a well-oiled machine. Two issues in, and I’m officially ready for this to be an ongoing series. Actually, I might have been ready after one issue

That may not be an accident, per se. This story is clearly setting up a new status quo for Mary Marvel and the Shazam supporting cast, and planting seeds for things that may or may not happen in the future. It’s doing a damn good job at auditioning to be an ongoing.

I say, what are we waiting for? Give it the green light!

The New Champion of Shazam! #1 Micro-Review – A Perfect Fit

It’s evident from the very first page that Campbell and Shaner are both a perfect fit for Mary Marvel. Campbell has a great voice for a young adult story like this one. Shaner’s art, meanwhile, looks young and modern. But it also captures a bit of that vintage, Golden Age vibe that the Shazam family is so closely identified with.

With the right story (which they may just have…), The New Champion of Shazam! has the potential to be really, really good.

Also, there’s a talking rabbit. Because why the hell not?

Weekly Comic 100s: Future State: Green Lantern #2

TITLE: Future State: Green Lantern #2
AUTHORS: Geoffry Thorne, Josie Campbell, Robert Venditti
ARTISTS: Tom Raney, Andie Tong, Dexter Soy
COLORISTS: Mike Atiyeh, Will Quintana, Alex Sinclair
LETTERERS:
Andworld Design, Dave Sharpe, Steve Wands
RELEASED: February 9, 2021

Exactly how old is Keli Quintela supposed to be? Her superhero name is Teen Lantern. But, although Andie Tong does a fine job here, she looks like she could be about 10.

Also, I wouldn’t complain at all if they want to team her with Mogo again. Their dynamic was kinda cute.

I give colorist Alex Sinclair so much credit. He gives almost all of his work a truly epic feel. I suspect that comes largely via his association with so many classic stories over the years.
