There’s a scene in this book where Batman is getting beat up by Joker’s  henchman Straightman, and he laments that Robin is away at a debate club meeting. Mind you, the scene presumably takes place late at night. Strange time for a school club meeting, huh? Unless he’s away on some kind of club-related trip. But that’s not what the book says…

Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad, is in this issue. I get confused about the timeline of this book. Is it supposed to be before or after the events of Justice League Unlimited?

I’ve made a point to call GCPD: The Blue Wall a spiritual successor to what Gotham Central was 20 years ago. But it’s important to note that while The Blue Wall is similar to Gotham Central in many ways, this book also does do its own thing.

Gotham Central was much more about what it’s like to be a cop in Gotham, a city with superheroes, supervillains, etc. The Blue Wall seems to focus more on the real-world, dark, and personal realities of being a police officer, in a story that just happens to be set in Gotham City.

Batman: The Adventures Continue – Season Three #2 Micro-Review – That Certain Look…

Kevin Altieri’s art is reminiscent of the original Batman: The Animated Series, as opposed to the subsequent show, The New Batman Adventures. That’s not a bad thing, per se. But aren’t these Adventures Continue issues are supposed to look like the latter?

This issue is largely about Harley Quinn, and incorporates her bisexual nature into the story. I have to assume that’s been formally done in the BTAS universe before…right? It’s certainly been done in the main DC Universe.

I like the idea of Tim getting his own arch nemesis. A Professor Moriarty to his Sherlock Holmes, etc. That’s what much of this story, and this issue in particular, build toward. The route the issue takes toward the reveal of our nemesis is a little befuddling, as it’s got a bunch of salt monsters, and a moment where Tim has to make himself vomit. But I like the destination we got to.

Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, who’s been our cover artist, does some interior work here. Thankfully, his style is similar enough to Rossmo’s that it works out okay.

Firstly, if you’re reading Batman’s dialogue and it’s not in the voice of the late Kevin Conroy, you’re doing it wrong.

For yours truly, the art literally makes or breaks these Adventures Continue stories. If you venture too far away from that Bruce Timm style, it kills the vibe. Thankfully, Jordan Gibson has mastered it. In terms of both the art and the writing, his felt like an episode of The New Batman Adventures. And when it comes to these issues, that’s the best you can hope for. It’s a tremendous trip down memory lane.

A Dark Crisis: Young Justice #5 Micro-Review – A Little Too Meta

This one got a little too meta for my taste. Our newly revealed villain, Mickey Mxyzptlk, has a big monologue about Young Justice being a “generation in limbo” that wasn’t “set up for success” by their elders. This story has had a meta layer to it from the get-go. But it lays it on a little too thick here.

Thankfully there’s still a lot of good stuff here, particularly about the Young Justice team being a family. Dark Crisis: Young Justice may still be the best thing to come out of the Dark Crisis event overall.

A Batman: The Adventures Continue – Season Two #7 Micro-Review – “Hatter’s Haberdashery”

***This is where we keep it nice and simple. Comic book reviews in 100 words or less. Straight, concise, and to the point.***

RELEASED: December 14, 2021

This being the final issue of Season Two, I can officially say this story wasn’t quite as thrilling or flashy as what we saw from Season One. But it definitely had more real world resonance, with a politician that uses comic book science to capture the public’s adoration. I’ll say it again, this story feels very Trump inspired.

Also, in this issue Batman says “Hatter’s haberdashery” with a straight face. That felt very Batman ’66, but I’ll allow it.

A Batman: The Adventures Continue – Season Two #6 Micro-Review – Batman vs. Trump?

Another issue into this evil mayor storyline, and it’s evident Dini and Burnett are drawing inspiration from the Donald Trump phenomenon in their portrayal of Emerson Mayfield. Particularly in how his charisma seems to entrance voters. Batman vs. Trump. Now there’s a match.

There’s a pretty cool sequence in this issue where Clayface attacks Batman from inside the Batmobile. Fittingly, it begs to be animated.

Also, in this issue Tim Drake calls Bruce “Bruised Wayne.” That’s why they’re two of the best Batman writers ever, folks…

This one’s got some meat to it, telling a story of how a young Batman took down Gotham’s corrupt mayor. And because this book is awesome, he’s wearing his gray and blue Batman: The Animated Series costume in the flashbacks.

I’m noticing Rick Burchett’s art isn’t necessarily as crisp and clean as Ty Templeton’s. At least not on this issue. The end product is still of high quality. It’s just a difference.

They’re doing a Birds of Prey tease of sorts with Batgirl and Huntress together, aren’t they?

Like Ty Templeton, Rick Burchett is a veteran of those old Batman: The Animated Series inspired comics. It’s nice to see him working on some of these characters again.

They bring back yet another one-off character from B:TAS here. Frankly, I’d rather Burnett and Dini go the extra mile and create some new characters for this series. It’s not like they don’t have the talent or the product knowledge…
