The overarcing villains for Ram V’s run on Detective Comics aren’t really landing with me. Unfortunately, I’m actually finding them a bit boring…

But on the plus side, he writes a great scene between Batman and Mr. Freeze that Ivan Reis absolutely knocks out of the park. We see what, to an extent, is Mr. Freeze’s Batcave. He calls it the “Kingdom of Cold.” Great stuff.

The Simon Spurrier/Hayden Sherman back-up starring Two-Face hasn’t landed with me either. They do, however, stick the landing as it ends this month. So there’s that.

My eyes glazed over a little bit on this one. Detective Comics has, for my money, a bit of a villain problem right now in that they’re just not that interesting. This annual attempts to fill in some of their background by taking us back to Gotham circa 1776, and it’s simply not that interesting. We see 1776 versions of Batman, Two-Face, and Poison Ivy, which doesn’t do anything for me.

I can’t throw a lot of stones at the execution of the issue, though. Particularly when it comes to Hayden Sherman, who handles the majority of the art.

These days, Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock have their own detective. I dig that because, as we’ve seen a bit in recent issues of Detective, it allows Gordon to have his boots on the ground a little more and mix it up alongside Batman.

They’re doing something a little weird with Two-Face here. The character’s good side is in control, but he’s pretending the bad side is in control. All the while, the bad side is talking to Harvey Dent via his inner monologue. It’s a little twisted up, but interesting if you can follow along.

There’s a moment in this issue where Jim Gordon is with a vulnerable Batman, and it’s suggested that he take Batman’s mask off. He replies that he thinks he knows who’s under there, but he doesn’t want to know. I loved that. That’s perfect. That’s the philosophy Gordon should have as it relates to Batman.

I was excited to see Hayden Sherman’s name on the back-up for this issue. He’s been doing great work at IDW and Image recently. Sherman and Nick Filardi give us a Two-Face story that gets downright trippy.

Above Snakes continues to display its rugged and bloody charm, along with its delightfully vulgar sense of humor. But things take more of an emotional turn this issue, as we dive into the core of the story.

Above Snakes is, as much as anything else, a story of a man seeking justice and vengeance…though not necessarily in that order. This issue sees our main character, Dirt, look his goal straight in the face. But of course, it’s never as simple as just pulling the trigger, is it?

I’ll be sad to see this one end next month.

Sean Lewis has a way with words that suits this book very well. For instance, we open this issue with our main character Dirt trying to “wash the ugly off me.” But it doesn’t work…

“Ugly sticks,” he says.

I like that. Poetic and true.

What is it about talking animal sidekicks? Dirt and his imaginary talking bird friend Speck have some funny interplay in this book. The bird is trying to get laid. Go figure.

Thus far, Dark Spaces: Wildfire has done a good job of making me believe. I believe that these female inmate firefighters are a tight-knight surrogate family. I believe they know the ins and outs of a fire. And I believe in what’s at stake for them.

There’s a certain grit to the artwork here that I find endearing. It’s fitting too, as these characters all have a certain grit to them. I suppose that’s what a combination of prison and fire will do to you…

A bit of old-west style life insight for your Thursday.

There’s a cathartic quality to these characters and this series. Bad things happen in this book, but then we see bad things happen to the people who did those bad things. It’s satisfying in that rugged and bloody sort of way.

Hayden Sherman’s colors combine with his deep black inks to create just the bloody western noir vibe this series strives for.

I get the sense that inmate female firefighters don’t have their stories told very often. So it’s pretty cool of this crew to focus on them, even in a fictional setting.

I haven’t seen much of Rescue Me. But I’m getting the sense Dark Spaces: Wildfire is going to be like Rescue Me meets Orange is the New Black, with some Ocean’s Eleven thrown in. And if that’s the case, there’s a lot of intrigue and potential here. This first issue does it’s job well, which is to say it draws the reader in and gets them invested in the characters. Particularly our lead.

I don’t normally get into westerns. For whatever reason, they’re just not my flavor of ice cream. But Above Snakes is, thus far, so simple and easy to get into that it grabbed me.

The premise is simple: A lone gunfighter seeking vengeance over the murder of his wife. The art from Hayden Sherman is suitably gritty, Sean Lewis’ writing has some charming wit to it, and we’ve got a hero who has a certain rugged and bloody charm.

Also: There’s a talking vulture. Because comics are pretty awesome sometimes.
