This issue imparts a universal truth upon us: “You can’t pick your mum. But you can overcome her in hand-to-hand combat.”

A fitting truth, as this issue of Golden Rage is particularly stabby.

Our narrator for this issue is a Hispanic character that speaks, to an extent, broken English. I liked that, as it’s something you don’t see often. It gives that character a unique voice.

There’s a page in this issue where a character’s narration boxes are purposefully placed over another character’s dialogue balloons. Said narrator then loses her train of thought. That’s an interesting way to portray the mind wandering, and makes me wonder if the character in question is about to struggle with dementia. Not exactly a cheery subject. But of course, it happens in the real world. So I say it’s fair game in this fictional one.

Golden Rage expands to include a sort of tribe of the dead in this issue. Pretty cool.

Golden Rage takes place in a world where older women are deemed useless and abandoned on an island. The solicitation calls it Battle Royale meets The Golden Girls. But once you discover just why they’re on the island, you learn there’s a touch of The Handmaid’s Tale in there too.

I appreciated and enjoyed this first issue. It gives a spotlight and a voice to a group that’s often as cast aside in the real world as they are in this story. Also, don’t let the “kindly grandma” imagery fool you. There are some bad ass ladies in this book.
