Epic Covers: Action Comics #1048 by Steve Beach

It’s always funny to me what a little or two can make a piece of art. In the case of this cover to Action  Comics #1048 by Steve Beach, it’s the wrinkles in Superman’s costume. As I’ve said in the past, Beach really channels George Reeves with his take on the character. All the more so as he makes the costume look like it’s made of cloth, very reminiscent of how Reeves’ suit looked on Adventures of Superman.

It’s definitely a “vintage” version of Superman. For my money, it’s a thing of beauty.

First and foremost, that cover is a thing of goddamn beauty. Steve Beach seems to be channeling George Reeves with his take on Superman. The colors are gorgeous too.

This is my first issue of Action Comics in awhile. As such, I’d forgotten just how good a handle Philip Kennedy Johnson has on the Superman character. He proves that very early on here.

Riccardo Federici and Lee Loughridge’s “sketchy” art is a really nice change of pace. It’s not necessarily what you expect to see when you pick up a Superman comic. But in this case, that’s a good thing.

The whole Batman and Robin aesthetic aside, which yet again proves DC has virtually no idea how to write non-Batman characters, this is a pretty cool story. It imagines a world where Clark and Lois are there for Jon Kent’s teen years, with Clark taking on a very George Reeves fatherly type role.

I don’t see Chris Burnham’s work nearly as much as I’d like to. So having him on this issue is a treat. His art has a really nice texture to it, and I’ve always enjoyed his figure rendering.
