This issue references specific songs by both Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones. I like me a good classic rock soundtrack.

This is very much a “back to basics” approach to a Green Lantern book. Hal Jordan is our star, we’re back in Coast City, he’s back at Ferris Air, etc. Nothing wrong with that. Hopefully it proves to be a good jumping-on point for newbies.

Not sure if John Stewart is getting the same approach with his back-up feature. But that certainly seems to be the case thus far. Gotta love a man who takes care of his mother…

This story kicks off with our hero riding a Tyrannosaurus Rex from space. Comics, am I right?

This issue tries to tell us that our hero’s official name isn’t Shazam anymore, but rather just “Captain.” His original name used to be Captain Marvel, of course. So I guess this is kind of a middle ground?

All in all, this is about as solid a first issue to a Shazam! series as you’ll find. We’ve got great writing by Mark Waid, and stellar art by Dan Mora and Alejandro Sanchez. I’m expecting good things from this series.

By and large, I don’t like the story of the Injustice: Gods Among Us game. Particularly, what it does to Superman and Wonder Woman as characters. That said, if you can buy that two of the greatest and most moralistic heroes in the world can become dictators, this is a pretty good issue from a character standpoint.

Tom Taylor drops in a great reference to something said in the first issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El about why Superman doesn’t “do more” for the world. I like that connection, and hope it gets explored more in the coming issues.

Superman to a defeated Metallo in this issue: “Whatever strength I have doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to those who need it. And right now, that’s you.”

I love that line. As far as this new stretch of Action Comics issues are concerned. Philip Kennedy Johnson feels like he’s really hit his stride.

Dan Jurgens handles both the writing and art duties on this month’s installment of “Lois and Clark 2.” Jurgens fits as well on a Superman story as anyone ever has. And yet, I still find myself missing Lee Weeks’ work, strictly for consistency’s sake.

A Superman #3 Micro-Review – “Suck Me Dry Like a Piece of Meat!”

The real meat of this Superman run continues to be the budding partnership (though not friendship) between Superman and Lex Luthor. At the end of the day, Superman refuses to give up on Lex’s potential to do good. That’s a sentiment that’s very true to the character, though he’ll inevitably wind up burned in the end.

Speaking of meat, in this issue Livewire has the perhaps unintentionally  suggestive line: “Suck me dry like a piece of meat!”

What we have here is a story about Conner Kent flying into space and taking on an alien force that’s invading another planet. Pretty good stuff. It’s fun for what it is.

The part of the story that I really bit into, though, was the early portion. It explores the very meta notion that Conner has become very redundant in a world (Heck, a single city!) filled with Kryptonian super-people. Especially since Jon Kent arrived. What is it that makes this Superboy distinct and different? If we can’t answer that question, we may as well drop him again.

This issue does a great job making Ultraman look like a despicable bad guy. It doesn’t amount to a great deal by the end, though…

Taylor writes gives Jon a great line here: “You think compassion is a weakness? I can’t think of anything weaker than caring only for yourself.”

I’m digging the look of this Red Tornado/Lois Lane hybrid character they’ve created. I’m hoping we see more of her.
