Visually, this issue is stunning. We get a big battle between our good and evil ninja clans, complete with a dragon for some reason. We’ve got beautifully rendered rain and a blood red sky for a big fight akin to something you’d see in 300 or The Lord of the Rings.

This series has me hyped for the inevitable confrontation between Daredevil and the Avengers. It’s coming, and I’ve got a strong sense it’s going to be awesome.

The jury is out for me on on Daredevil’s bearded look. His costume has a hood these days, and it sometimes makes him look like “Hobo Daredevil.” Not that a hobo couldn’t kick ass, of course…

So does the Punisher not use guns anymore? I’m pretty behind on Frank Castle’s business, as I’m not his biggest fan. But I like that he’s using swords instead of guns. Gun’s are a coward’s weapon. There, I said it.

Elektra has a little dust-up with Iron Man in this issue, at of all places, the White House. As one might imagine, things escalate quickly. Fun stuff.

There’s also a really insightful multi-page exchange between Matt and Bullet, where the former explains what he’s trying to do with the Fist, and their more compassionate take on society. It’s a great exchange in that it makes you want to root for Matt, while also feeling for him as he takes on something so large. This might be the strongest issue of this series yet.

Daredevil tells an opponent in this issue that if they were right with God, “…He wouldn’t have sent the devil.” That’s a great action movie kind of line.

The way Marco Checchetto draws Elektra’s hair is…quaint. It looks good, but it also looks like she’s perpetually underwater.

Generally speaking, though, this is a beautifully drawn and colored issue. We see some beautiful renderings of the snow-capped mountains surrounding the Hand’s HQ. We also get a fight between Daredevil and someone we recently met in the MCU that’s got some nice grit to it.

Word is already out about what happens with Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios in this issue. I won’t spoil it by coming out and outright saying it. But I will say that, while it could have come off really hokey, this milestone manages to feel very true to both characters. They’re in their element. And hey, they even have matching costumes!

Zdarsky has also succeeded in making Matt and Elektra’s taking over of the Hand feel like the start of something big. Despite not being a Daredevil die-hard, this book has my attention…

How sad is it that I haven’t even seen Daredevil’s appearance on She-Hulk, and yet I’m pretty much fully aware of all the “controversy” said appearance generated among some fans. Oye…

On paper it works though, doesn’t it? They’re both lawyers. They’re both superheroes. They have a lot in common! What’s the big deal?

Here’s Mike Hartigan making Jennifer Walters and Matt Murdock look like a power couple in his own fun, animated way.

Steel: “I can totally take care of a pet on my own. Remember, I have animal DNA in me. I’ll be a natural!” Just as a reminder, Steel does not in fact have animal DNA in him. He has scarab beetle DNA in him. A beetle is an insect. Just sayin…

I will say though, that watching a six-foot tall robot dote on a potted plant (to show he could care for a pet) was unexpectedly hilarious.

Jamie Linehan voices Steel, as well as Vargoyle. This episode puts them in a scene together. Any voice actor who has enough range to effectively play two opposing characters in a scene is damn good at their job. So my hat’s off to him.

Ben and Betty in Hell, Power Rangers Beast Morphers, Rewriting Historhy

Ben and Betty accidentally damage a “mega transporter,” and wind up teleported to various places around the cosmos. It’s a green screen effect, of course. The first place they’re teleported is to an erupting volcano (shown above). In that moment, a brilliant idea for a spin-off miniseries popped into my head: Ben and Betty in Hell.

Dark? Yes. But you know it’d be damn interesting. Damn interesting.

The Red Ranger and Vargoyle have an extended fight scene in a long corridor. They even fight upside down on the ceiling for a few seconds, which is pretty cool.

Ever see the famous hallway fight sequence from the first season of Daredevil? This corridor fight brought it to mind. They’re two completely different animals, obviously. But this almost felt like the Power Rangers take on a hallway fight.

Wait, Steel gives up his new dog at the end because he supposedly doesn’t have time to take care of him? That’s pretty lame. Why not just give the character a dog? From a creative standpoint, it’s not like you’d have to show it that often. Plus, I like the idea of a robot with a pet dog. It’s just silly enough to belong in the Power Rangers universe.

This opening scene has Daredevil in a coffee shop, talking to a cop while wearing a gray hoodie over his superhero outfit. Here’s my question: Why even bother with the hoodie? People can see you’re wearing a red mask. They can see your red Daredevil pants. Who does he think he’s fooling with that hoodie?

It looks like Daredevil is going to be a nexus point for a few different Marvel heroes. We’re already seeing a good amount of Luke Cage. And then we’ve got the man revealed as leader of the Hand…

I hopped aboard the recent Daredevil relaunch a couple months ago, and have thus far enjoyed the ride. This cover was a nice little bonus.

What sealed the deal for me on this one was the whole blood drops/puppet strings motif. I can’t recall if I’ve seen that done before. But if I have, it wasn’t executed this well. It fits Daredevil and his world to a T. Plus, the blood red color goes with his costume.

This issue is extra-sized, with lots of guest artists. Go figure. The timing worked out so they got to go all out for the second issue, not the first.

I’m intrigued by what Zdarsky, Checchetto, and the team are doing with this villain. The whole “villain that’s trying to do what they think is best for the hero” thing seems to fit Hell’s Kitchen well.

Checchetto is another good fit for Daredevil’s world. He and Matthew Wilson have the whole gray, rainy, semi-gothic aesthetic down really well.

Huh. I didn’t know Chip Zdarsky could draw. He’s pretty good!
