This is a beautifully drawn issue. Both in terms of the variant cover (which is a tremendous tribute to the original TMNT #1) by Bon Bernardo, and the interiors by Dan Mora and Raul Angulo.

It’s quite evident that Ryan Parrott has these characters down pat. Case in point: My favorite part of the issue is a quite little training scene with Jason and Leo.

We also see Don and Mike in “human” form. In a cool nice little twist, they’re both black. I don’t know that that’s something the majority of fans would call.

Bon Bernardo has been featured on this site before. That’s not an accident. As far as Power Rangers art is concerned he’s one of the best, if not the best, I’ve ever seen. He captures everything almost perfectly. And several days ago, he posted what’s undoubtedly one of the most important and emotional pieces he’s ever done…

I’m still torn up about Jason David Frank’s suicide. I probably will be for a long time. And during a period where so many of us are mourning the loss of this titanic figure from our childhoods (and adulthoods, for that matter), Bernardo came through with this stunning image of JDF ascending into heaven via a white light. Fittingly, it’s not unlike the way the White Ranger descended into the Command Center in “White Light, Part II.”

You are missed, Jason. For more than just Power Rangers. We love you.

Power Rangers Spotlight: Red Ranger Redemption by Batang ’90s Art

I’m always wary of writing up the same person more than once in a limited period of time. Bon Bernardo, a.k.a. Batang ’90s Art, was actually the first creator I featured under the “Power Rangers Spotlight” banner. But as he’s one of, if not the premiere fan artist in the community, you see a lot of him. And recently, he hit another home run.

While I enjoy video games, they’re not really my arena. As such, I know next to nothing about Red Dead Redemption II. But of course, I can appreciate good piece of cover art when I see it. Evidently, Bernardo can as well…

Obviously this is timely, what with the release of the game. But it’s also an objectively beautiful parody and tribute. I’m not the only one that thinks so, either. This piece is now being used for merch up at Ript Apparel. It was even shared on Instagram by Austin St. John, the original Red Ranger himself!

Power Rangers Spotlight: Thuy Trang by Batang ’90s Art

You may or may not have noticed, but I’m a recently un-closeted, and unabashed Power Rangers geek. So much so that I’ve actually been concerned that there’s been too much PR content on the site lately.

Ergo, I’ve decided to give myself a regular outlet for all things Power Rangers. Instead of using features like “Astonishing Art” or “Panels of Awesomeness,” I’ll simply put them here in “Power Rangers Spotlight.” And I can think of no one better to shine the spotlight on than this artist, and this piece.

Bon Bernardo is an illustrator and designer that goes under the handle “Batang ’90s Art.” As anyone who follows him knows, he’s done no shortage of Power Rangers work. Point blank, he’s one of the best PR fan artists you’ll ever see. For all the proof you’ll need, check out his TeePublic, Instagram, and Facebook pages.

A few weeks ago Bernardo he posted a piece that’s simply beautiful. But on an entirely different level…

For the uninitiated, this is Thuy Trang. She played Trini, the Yellow Ranger, on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. As an adult, you look back and see she brought a quiet kind of grace to that character. As a kid, you didn’t necessarily notice what she brought to the show until she had already left.

Trang was tragically killed in September of 2001 as a result of a car accident. But her memory lives on, largely due to her contributions to Power Rangers.

What I love so much about this piece by Bernardo is that it perfectly captures the Thuy Trang that we all remember. Stunning beauty, along with a poise and grace beyond her years. There’s something about that pose too.

It’s ironic, really. So often, Bon Bernardo draws the colorful, the flambouyant, the fantastic. But it’s this, one of his simplest works, that carries the most weight. Rest in peace, Thuy.
