I’ve been saving this one for a special occasion. Batman Day seems appropriate, no?

I love this shot from Fachro because it feels like something that could actually happen on the old Adam West Batman show. Plus, if there’s one person who could catch a damn shark with a fishing line, it’s Batman.

Kudos to Fachro for putting the Joker in the background. It makes things a little more interesting, and adds an element of story to the proceedings.

I love me a good classic cover homage. And as we prepare for Batman Day this weekend, @kneelbeforezod brings us his homage to one of the great covers featuring the Dark Knight (shown below right). Though oddly enough, it’s actually the cover to a Wonder Woman book…

Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia sees the Amazon Princess honor-bound to protect a killer, which brings her into direct conflict with Batman. Thus, the classic cover by J.G. Jones (shown above left). A cover that, fittingly, was just hat-tipped by Yanick Paquette for Wonder Woman #790 (shown below left).

Toy Chest Theater: Sgt. Slaughter by Eddie Merriken

You know what’s weird? Sgt. Slaughter’s chin.

In this image from Eddie Merriken, the head doesn’t necessarily look like it belongs. It’s like everything else is this bad ass G.I. Joe adventure, and there’s this one character with a cartoon/caricature chin. But nope. That’s an actual human being, and an accurate rendering of the real-life Robert Remus’ head. It’s like the man was crafted by God to be a living cartoon character.

But of course, this is an awesome image regardless of the…chin factor. It’s the background that really makes it. Having the other soldiers shrouded in the mist (or is it smoke?) sets a great mood. The pose and high level of detail in the figure help immensely as well.

Toy Chest Theater: Wolverine by @SaiyanWolf4

This image has a lot going for it. You’ve got Wolverine’s bright costume constrasted against the background. You’ve got the rich detail in the Sentinel figure at his feet. And are those light touches of blood I see?

But what really puts this pic by @SaiyanWolf4 over the top, for my money at least, is the positioning of the figure’s arms and head. Wolverine is looking at his hands, seemingly in awe of his own power. If he’d wanted to be more on-the-nose about it, he our photographer could have had the figure’s hands straight out and its head up. It would have been more dramatic, but necessarily not in a good way. Instead, he went for a more understated and subtle approach.

Subtlety isn’t really Wolverine’s strong suit. But it works for him here.

Toy Chest Theater: She-Hulk and Iron Man by @wheysnaps

In honor of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, which drops on Disney+ today, here’s a shot from @wheysnaps (in collaboration with @sarah_squirrel77 and @dalbermatianman) of the titular heroine putting Iron Man in an Ankle Lock.

As a wrestling fan, I can appreciate that the Ankle Lock is an actual hold used in pro wrestling. It’s been applied regularly by the likes of Ken Shamrock, Kurt Angle, and more recently Ronda Rousey.

Toy Chest Theater: Mario’s Dinosaur Chase

Super Mario has been intrinsically linked with dinosaurs since Super Mario World in 1990. Wait, do Koopa Troopas count as dinosaurs? If so, then it goes back even further.

Either way, this mash-up of Super Mario Kart and a very angry-looking T-Rex is a perfect fit. The kicking up of the rubble under the cars gives the image a great sense of speed.

Our photographer, Mark Phillips, tipped his hat to Mitchel Wu for inspiration. I assume he’s talking about this image from Wu, which presents a very similar chase. Phillips did a nice job putting his own spin on the idea, though.

Either way, this shot from Cap Wolf Photos delightfully captures the spirit of James Mangold’s film, and Hugh Jackman’s final performance as the character. Is Logan talked about as one of the better comic book movies of the last decade? If not, it should be…

Toy Chest Theater: Hulk vs. Godzilla

Does Hulk stand a chance against Godzilla? I say he does. He’s probably the only (relatively) normal-sized being that could be a physical threat to the King of the Monsters.

Either way, @toystorys_ puts up a pretty convincing argument with this image. A nice tight shot of our two characters, milliseconds before Godzilla tries to blast Hulk into oblivion. The lighting effect is great, and the scale difference between Godzilla and Hulk is spot on. A beautifully done image.

Toy Chest Theater: Goldar in the City

There’s just something about Goldar. The gold armor, the fierce face, the broad wings, the big sword, that scary voice from Kerrigan Mahan. When you put it all together, it made for one of the most intimidating and formidable villains in Power Rangers history. And he wasn’t even one of the main villains!

Panoramic Toys presents us with this great shot of Goldar making his way through (presumably) Angel Grove as the sun sets over the city. That lighting is what really makes the image. It sets a sort of mood and tone one might not normally associate with Power Rangers.
