This issue is centered around a seemingly reformed Harvey Dent throwing a birthday/retirement party for his father. Kudos to Mariko Tamaki, as I don’t think we’ve met Harvey’s dad before, have we? I know he’s been referenced…

There’s a great sense of dread that permeates much of this story. It’s like reading a Greek tragedy. You pretty much know what the ending is going to be, and you know it’s not going to be good. But somehow you can’t look away.

What’s more, it’s a beautifully drawn and colored Greek tragedy, thanks to Javier Fernandez and Jordie Bellaire.

  1. Harvey’s father was introduced in “Eye of the Beholder” in Batman Annual #14 from 1990. It’s a masterpiece of a story, and one of the main “influences” on The Long Halloween. It’s been collected in two books currently in print: Batman: The Caped Crusader vol 3 and Two-Face: A Celebration of 75 Years.

The father’s only other appearance was in Batman/Two-Face: Crime and Punishment by the great JM DeMatteis, from 1995. It’s collected in Batman Arkham: Two-Face.

Both are two of the very best Two-Face stories ever written, highly recommended. For all of Tamaki’s talent elsewhere, One Bad Day does a huge disservice to Harvey Dent and his canon relationship and backstory with his dad. Please consider checking these stories out if you are so inclined.
